Keep your Family Safe. Three Simple steps to protect your children on the Internet

Keep your Family Safe. Three Simple Steps to help Protect your children from the Internet.

Did you know that there a number of simple & free ways to help you protect your children on the internet? Perhaps the easiest is Google’s free ‘Safe Search’. This service allows children (and yourself, for that matter) to surf the web with a much lower risk of accidently calling up illicit material.

Here are a couple of examples;

1.    Implement the use of Google Safe Search

Implement the use of Google Safe Search  by making it your home page and using it  whenever your family searches online. Using this website ensures that Google Safe Search is always turned ON. http://www.safesearchkids.com/

2.    Have kids under 9? Use http://www.kidclicks.org/ .

This is Google’s way of helping minimizing the “clicks”  that so many little kids click on. It streamlines safe clicks for every search term entered. It also ensures Google Filtering is On and Locked.

3.    YouTube Parental Controls – Turn it “ON”

There are few things worse than having your 7 year old search for information on Snakes and having YouTube display some riskee content.   Is the solution forbidding YouTube? That’s hardly going to happen. The Good News is that there are Parental Controls you can activate in just a few minutes. Just make sure you “Lock” it, so it can’t be inadvertently turned off.

To implement the Parental Controls for YouTube, go to YouTube.com and scroll down to the bottom of the page....

You will see a reference to Safety Mode and it will say Off. Simply click the bottom and it will now say “On”

Likewise, if you want to turn YouTube Safe Search Off, click the bottom what will now say "On"...

Locking YouTube Safe Search

As you will see, it's very easy to turn safe search on and off.  Therefore, you may want to lock it in order to ensure it is always activated for all family members.

To Lock the Parental Control for YouTube, you will need a Google account.  To open a free Google account, go to google.com and click "Sign In" in the top right hand corner of their main website. You will then see the option to create a new account.
Now return to YouTube and scroll down to the bottom of the page to the safety mode link as shown above.

After selecting the "On" button, you will see an option to Lock Safe Search.
